Tour of Austria in Steyr – The Austrian Cycling Event 2024

(This article in German) The well known Austrian Cycling Event, also known as the Tour of Austria, is one of the most traditional and prestigious cycling events in Central Europe and made a stop in Upper Austria in 2024 – in the historic iron town of Steyr. Since 1949, this tour has been held annually, offering fans a breathtaking spectacle each year. In 2024, the 73rd edition of the Tour of Austria took place from July 2nd to 7th. A special highlight was the 2nd stage, which led from Maria Taferl to Steyr, marking the first time in the tour’s history that it made a stop in this industrial town in Upper Austria.

The Premiere in Steyr

Steyr, the picturesque town at the confluence of the Enns and Steyr rivers, was a stage finish for the Austria Cycling Tour for the first time. Previously, Steyr had only been a transit point, but in 2024, the finish line was set up in the historic town square. For the organizers, this was an important step in further boosting the popularity of cycling in Austria and highlighting new regions, with Steyr’s backdrop being particularly inviting. After all, the legendary Ennstal-Classic old-timer rally has also made a stop here for some time.

Our Tip: Always secure a good spot along the route well in advance to follow the finale live. Streets are closed long before the riders’ arrival, giving you plenty of time to find a strategically good viewing point.

Here is a YouTube video by our editorial team showing the stage at the city limits of Steyr:

The Route of the 2nd Stage

The 2nd stage of the Tour of Austria 2024 took the riders over 184.5 kilometers from Maria Taferl in the Mostviertel to Steyr. Along this route, the professionals had to overcome a total of 2,257 meters in altitude, making the stage a real challenge. Highlights included climbs at Melk, Waidhofen an der Ybbs, and shortly before the finish in Steyr, the so-called “Porscheberg.”

Section Distance (km) Elevation Gain (m)
Maria Taferl – Melk 30 400
Melk – Waidhofen a.d. Ybbs 60 800
Waidhofen a.d. Ybbs – Steyr 94.5 1,057
Total 184.5 2,257

The Favorites for the Stage Win in Steyr

With its challenging route and numerous climbs, the 2nd stage of the Tour of Austria 2024 favored mountain specialists. Among the favorites for the stage win in Steyr were riders like Felix Großschartner from UAE Team Emirates, who had been successful in the Austria Tour in previous years. Other top contenders included Brandon Smith Rivera from Ineos Grenadiers, Davide de Pretto from Jayco-AlUla, and Xandro Meurisse from Alpecin-Deceuninck.

Our Tip: Felix Großschartner’s performance was particularly impressive. The Austrian from UAE Team Emirates was considered a dark horse for the stage win in Steyr and could spring a surprise in the final kilometers.

However, there was a significant accident right after the start, which ended the race for overall leader Max Walscheid due to injury. Colombian Brandon Rivera Vargas then took the lead in this section.
